I Remember
(Janice B./MoRece)

We both came up in the same neighborhood you could say we were best of friends
In the innocence of youth we played we didn’t see the differences
Black or white didn’t matter no..we ain’t know about the world
Because everything is beautiful in the eyes of little girls.

And I remember playing hide and seek
I remember roller skating in the street
Playing our records all night long
Thought we was Minnie Ripperton
And I remember how it used to be
Jumping double dutch out in the street
Missing the bus and have to run
Counting the clouds that cross the sun
The story of our lives had just begun.

With each school year came the reality that the world could be unkind
Though we felt like sisters other drew dividing lines
It hurt you when they taunted you…they couldn’t see your light inside
A note slipped in my locker…you need to stay with your own kind.

But I remember playing hide and seek
I remember roller skating in the street
Playing our records all night long
Thought we was Minnie Ripperton
And I remember how it used to be
Jumping double dutch out in the street
Missing the bus and have to run
Counting the clouds that cross the sun
The story of our lives had just begun

Why can’t they see what unites you and me when they look to define one another?
If they could see through our eyes then maybe they’d realize that friendship and love have no color.

We both came up in the same neighborhood now we’re still so much more than friends
With an innocence inside our hearts we still don’t see the differences
Black or white still don’t matter no..though we know about the world
Let’s keep our hearts looking through the eyes of those two girls.

I remember playing hide and seek
Roller skating in the street
Playing our records all night long
Thought we was Minnie Ripperton
I remember how it used to be
Jumping double dutch out in the street
Missing the bus and have to run
Counting the clouds that cross the sun
I remember yeah….girl I remember back in the day
Maybe the world has changed but in our hearts we’re still the same
