The Visit
(Janice B./MoRece)

I went to the place that bears her name
etched in the stone above the date that my whole world changed.
I prayed for a sign that she was still there.
A call from a lone bird, a chill in the air…
but nothing came.
I walked through the town that she once graced
with her laughter, spirit, and song surely time can’t erase.
I prayed for a sign that she was still there.
A distant piano, her perfume in the air…
but there wasn’t a trace.

Can she see that I’m here? Does she know that I came...
to show her how I’ve grown and how much I’ve changed?
I wanted to tell her that I miss her so much.
The lilt of her laughter…The warmth of her touch.

I arrived at the place where once stood her home.
Just a vacant lot by her church which now stands alone.
I prayed for a sign that she was still there.
A hint of remembrance in a passerby’s stare…
but there was none.
I climbed to the top of the rock and looked down
upon the tiny town where she wasn’t found.
I prayed for a sign that she was still there.
A sudden wind from the valley whistling wild through the air…
but there wasn’t a sound.

Can she see that I’m here? Does she know that I came?
That I married a good man and have a new name?
I wanted to tell her I visit her in my dreams..
and she’s playing piano while this little girl sings.

I sat down on the rock and closed my eyes
overwhelmed by these memories that filled me inside,
and I realized the sign that she was still there
resides within my heart and these songs that I share keep her spirit alive.
I returned to the place that bears her name,
pressed my lips to the stone and whispered “Goodbye” as I turned away.
With my head towards the sky I offered a prayer…
and smiled as a lone bird called to me in the air.
And my whole world….changed.
